Geology In My Life

 A Brief Introduction

Hello, my name is Ashley Stone. I am a Sophomore working toward my Bachelors in Business Management, but my overall goal is to get a Masters in Architecture. My desire to take this class stemmed from my interest in rock formations and my curiosity about the whys and hows of the formation of the Earth, however, I also know the knowledge gained in this class will have practical applications in my future career.

Morenci Arizona

I live in a small copper mining community in southeast Arizona called Morenci.  Other kinds of industry in the area are cotton, cattle, and corrections.

Where Do I See Geology in My Every Day Life? 

In My Travels

I see Geology in little historical towns like Jerome, Arizona where underground mining of copper was done until the 1950s. Jerome is near Sedona, Arizona and is a breathtaking, beautiful destination to view nature and appreciate rock formation.

   

The Glen Canyon Dam is a miracle of construction that shows the use of Earths natural resources and natural land forms to control the flow of water. Here we have a beautiful picture of water seeping through the porous rock next to Lake Powell 

 

The Grand Canyon is a smorgasbord of color and texture. The beauty of this geological formation truly brings awe to the beholder and a deeper understanding of just how much there is to know about the Earth's formation.

At Home

  Geology can be found in my own home town and right in my  very own back yard. In fact, most of the ground in my backyard is made of rock. The rocky soil is mostly acidic in chemical make up which poses a challenge in balancing to soil for a novice like me. Planting grass and growing plants has never been such a challenge.

Every Day

Geology is a big part of every day life. It is all around us in its natural and man made forms. I appreciate its beauty, its uses, and its science. I look forward to the many things I will be learning in Physical Geology this semester and the discoveries I will make about geology in the place I live.
