Sedimentary Rocks
The rock I found is what I assume to be a sedimentary rock based on a few of its characteristics.
Matrix: poorly sorted grains have settled into the rock's porous spaces.
Recrystallized Calcite: Visible formation of crystals in the surface of the rock.
You can see the crystal formation where the rock looks wet. That is actually pretty sparkles winking at you in the sun. There are also crystal above in that same crevice. They look like small milky white bumps in the picture
More about the rock.
This rock isn't well rounded or small in size. It is to be assumed that wherever its source, it did not travel far before settling.
Size: The rock is about cobble size
Shape: It has some rounded sides, but is angular in shape.
About the area
In this picture you can see the conglomerate deposition of rocks in the hill side. It is not a well sorted mixture of rocks and grains. There is a noticeable layer of sediment on top that is of smaller sized rocks indicating that they were deposited at a different time.
Recall
Do you remember what what said about rocks like this in the book?
What climate would you find a rock like this? What kind of weathering is evident?
